In the English and US systems, there is some ambiguity and confusion with regard to the ounce because the same word 'ounce' is used for both weight and volume.

One ounce (mass or weight) is equal to 28.35 grams.

One fluid ounce is equal to about 29.57 cubic centimeters or milliliters.

From the conversion factor: 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735297 milliliters, (abbreviated as fl. oz) implies that it is used as a unit of VOLUME for both Imperial and US systems of units.

While an ounce (abbreviated as oz) as implied by the below conversion factor is a unit of MASS.

1 ounce = 28.3495231 grams

Therefore: 1 fluid ounce is a measure of volumn: There are 8 ounces in one cup of liquid. 1 ounce is a measure of weight: There are 16 ounces in 1 pound.

A Troy ounce is 1/12th of a pound weight, used now to gauge the weight of precious metals and is equal to 480 grains.

An ordinary ounce is 1/16th of a pound weight for general measurement and is equal to 437.5 grains.

A troy ounce is equal to 31.103 grams and there are 12 of them in a troy pound.

An ounce is equal to 28.349 grams and there are 16 of them in a pound.

Just to keep everyone confused, the word "ounce" is used for both a unit of weight/force

and a unit of volume/capacity.

16 ounces of force is equal to one pound of force, and 32 ounces of volume is equal to one quart. OK ?

In an attempt to clarify the situation when the physical dimension is not obvious from the context,

the unit is often referred to as a "fluid ounce" when it means volume.

What is the difference in volume between 1 dry ounce of weight and 1 liquid ounce?

The density of the dry material would have to be known to calculate this. In theory there could be no difference in volume. Most foods get smaller as they loose water though. Which means the volume of the dry food will likely be much less than the wet/fresh food. A rough estimate is 1/3 to 1/4 a volume of the dry equals 1 volume of the wet/fresh.

Are liquid and dry tablespoons different?

Yes, one dry cup is equal to 1.1636 liquid cup, or a little more than 2 (liquid) ounces more. Depending on the recipe, it may not make enough difference to make the recipe fail, but it can mean the difference between an "okay" cake and an "amazing" cake.

Is a cup and a half equal to 12oz?

No. 12 ounces is equal to 12 ounces, and 1 ounce is equal to 1 ounce. I'm not sure what you're asking, or trying to get at here. But trust me... an ounce is an ounce is an ounce. Unless, you're speaking of the differences between dry and liquid measurements.

A liquid measure looks like wherever the liquid comes to, inside a measuring cup. Liquid measures are different from "dry" measures. An ounce of flour is not the same as an ounce of water. One is by weight, the other is by volume. FriPilot

How many liquid ounces are in 3 dry ounces?

From what I have come to understand, there is onetablespoon measure per one dry ounce. This is apparently different from liquid ounces, where twotablespoon equals one liquid ounce. There are 16 tablespoons in a cup, therefore there are 2 Tablespoons to an oz. There are 8 fluid oz to a cup.
