FULL GRAIN LEATHER

This leather is the most natural leather available. This leather shows the life of the animal it was taken from. It shows all of the scratches, cuts, different variations in the grain, all of which have healed over time. These imperfections or character marks are sometimes referred to as "nature's signatures".

ANILINE LEATHER

Sometimes when leather has to much character or to many imperfections manufactures have to sand or buff the hide to take out some of these imperfections. This process makes the leather more even while still maintaining a natural look a light surface coating may be applied to the leather to protect againist soiling and spillages while still giving it a natural appearance.

What is more durable semi analine leather or corrected grain leather?

Semi aniline leather is really more of a dying process. Usually a semi aniline leather has has a corrected grain, hence the use of semi aniline. What happens on a semi aniline leather is that small defects on the leather hide have been buffed or sanded and then get an embossed grain or corrected grain. In order to have color consistency, a semi aniline dye is utilized. Leathers that need large areas of correction are embossed all over and usually have a pigmented finish. A semi aniline leather is fairly high quality and needs more maintenance and care than a purely pigmented finish because part of the natural characteristics remain. What is the difference in top grain leather and full grain leather?

Full grain leather is the highest quality of leather that you can get and is made from the entire cowhide. It is thick, making it very strong and durable. It also is costs a lot more than many other types of leather. Top grain leather is leather that has imperfections on the surface of the hide that are removed by sanding and then refinished. It has also had the "split" layer removed, meaning that the bottom layer of the hide is taken away. Top grain leather is thinner than full grain and is less expensive. It also is more supple.

What are attributes of full grain leather versus top grain leather?

Full grain leather and Top Grain leather are the same as deined by the American Tanners association.

Is the term soft butter leather a promotional term or a type of leather?

It is a promotional term for selling products. There is some very misleading information about leather and its care and you should be cautious about claims made from care product manufacturers. LAA What you really want to check is whether it is aniline treated full-grain leather. These high quality leathers are very soft and may be described as buttersoft (or 'butterskin' according to Remy's 'Skin Information Guide'). According to that clothes site, 'butterskin' is a term applied to high grade English lambskins with full aniline tannage. Roden Leathers refer to one of their quality full grain leathers as butter soft but use of the word butter independent of confirmation that the leather has been aniline treated is not a technical term and does not offer any quality guarantee. The term does not appear to be widely used. Aniline dyeing is reserved for high-quality full-grain leathers but there is more than one type of aniline dyeing - the three I am aware of are full, pull-up or semi. Full aniline leathers have no coating in order to keep maximum breathability but this means they are less protected from liquids than the other two finishes. Pigmented leathers are highly durable for furnishings etc. Pigmented leather is highly durable but it needs an expert to verify whether the skin quality used was high quality full-grain or corrected grain. Watch out in particular for laminated, bonded or bicast leather - the last two are not leather by most definitions and laminated products may not fit the criteria for leather. The qualities of leather (pliability, ageing, durability, breatheability) and leather substitutes depend on the skins used and how they are processed, so affect their suitability for use in furnishing, clothing etc. If your sole concern is the appearance and you're not bothered by its longevity, you don't need to pay so much attention to these details.

Whats the difference be tween top grain leather and genuine leather?

Top Grain leather is considered as the second highest grade of leather, and is as strong and durable as full grain leather. It is split from the top layer of hide and sanded and refinished. Genuine leather is made from the remaining layers after the top layer has been removed. It has a suede surface that is refinished to appear of a higher grade.

How do you different good cowhide leather and bad cowhide leather?

The best quality leather is known as Full Grain. This is the top split of the leather (also known as the hair split) but where no buffing, sanding or correcting has taken place. The Full Grain then can be pigment coated or aniline dyed. This will always be the softest and best quality leather, it will also be the most expensive. Cheaper quality leather comes from the top split but has been sanded or buffed (corrected) to remove imperfections and then pigment coated or finished. This will always be a lower quality product but can be hard wearing.
