Basalt is the most common volcanic rock. It contains the minerals plagioclase and augite. It can come in black or dark gray and has a hardness of 6-7 on the MOHS scale. Its grains are fine.

Granite is an intrusive rock. It contains feldspar, quartz and mica. It can come in black, gray, pink, red, or yellow. It has a hardness of 6 on the MOHS scale. Its grains are fine.

Both, however, are igneous rocks.

They are formed from different magmas with different characteristics. Granite contains more silicates than basalt. Basalt has more iron and magnesium. Granite is an intrusive igneous rock. Basalt is an extrusive igneous rock.

  • Basaltic - describes a dense, dark colored igneous rock formed from magma, rich in magnesium and iron; poor in silica.
  • Granitic - describes generally light-colored, silica-rich igneous rock that is less dense than basaltic rock.

Granite is different both in composition and formation. In addition, granite typically has much larger crystals than basalt.

  • Granite is an intrusive igneous rock, classically with 65% Quartz and 35% Feldspar (though mineralogy varies), which forms underground, frequently within a pluton, or batholith (a large body/chamber of magma). This causes it to have a long cooling time, especially in the middle of the intrusion, giving the crystals longer to form.
  • Basalt is a 'Basic' igneous rock. It is also 'Mafic', containing always a low portion of Quartz and also Feldspars. It is extrusive and is frequently formed above the surface of the Earth, often in a lava flow. It cools quickly as it often intrudes quickly, but does not form a large body, so crystals form quickly and thus are relatively small.
