Guided Media : Guided Transmission Media uses a "cabling" system that guides the data signals along a specific path. The data signals are bound by the "cabling" system. Guided Media is also known as Bound Media.

Unguided Transmission Media consists of a means for the data signals to travel but nothing to guide them along a specific path. In a guided medium signal passes through a physical pathway(s), while in an unguided medium signal passes through a vacuum, it is independent of a physical pathway.

With guided transmission media, the waves are guided along a physical path; examples of guided media include phone lines, twisted pair cables, coaxial cables, and optical fibers. Unguided transmission media are methods that allow the transmission of data without the use of physical means to define the path it takes. Examples of this include microwave, radio or infrared. Unguided media provide a means for transmitting electromagnetic waves but do not guide them; examples are propagation through air, vacuum and seawater. For guided twisted pair cable is easily available and it is the cheapest in the wired medium as of now. It is easier to install and needs no expertise in installing the medium. In case of breakup on a part of cable, it doesn’t affect the whole network. It is light weight, flexible and easier to handle. Additional nodes can be added easily. However, the unguided media also called unbounded media as it does not have any border limitation. The unguided media allows the user to connect all the time, as the communication is wireless the user can connect himself from anywhere to the network. Radio waves are generated easily; they are low-frequency signals and can travel a long distance.
