∙ 14y agoHYPOtonic solution is one that contains more liquid than solid on the outside of the cell. Example, water is a HYPOtonic solution because it's just water. The water goes into the cell and causes it to expand, because if you have a HYPOtonic solution the water will go into the cell ,and the cell will either increase in size or burst because the membrane is not big enough.
HYPERtonic solution is one with more solid on the outside of the cell. Pure Corn syrup is a HYPERtonic solution because it had more solids, the corn syrup, than water. This solution will cause the cell to shrivel/decrease in size.
EXAMPLE: Take two normal eggs, get two cups and fill them with vinegar. Drop one egg in each cup. Let them sit for about a day. Wash them off and notice that the eggs have no shells, ALSO they have increased in size. You will see this if you compare them to another normal egg. Take one of these eggs and get another cup; fill it with normal water from the tap and let it sit over night. Take the other egg, get a cup and fill it with pure corn syrup. Let them sit for a day. Now, see if you can answer the questions below:
