Nitrification is the biological oxidation of ammonia with oxygen into nitrite followed by the oxidation of these nitrites into nitrates - carried out in soil by the action of nitrifying bacteria on decaying organic matter.

Nitrogen fixation is the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into compounds, such as ammonia, by natural agencies or various industrial processes - eg. Rhizobium bacteria in the root nodules of legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen.

Nitrogen fixation is one part of the cycle: the part where nitrogen from the atmosphere in converted to nitrogen compounds by organisms. The other parts are the transfer of nitrogen compounds from one organism to another (the food chain) and the return of nitrogen to the atmosphere.

Nitrogen fixation converts nitrogen gas into ammonia, but denitrification converts nitrates into nitrogen gas. So i guess denitrification must first occur for nitrogen fixation to happen.
