What is the difference between the Deuteronomic History and the Chronicles?

The Deuteronomic History (Books of Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 and 2 Kings) is believed to have been written during the reign of King Josiah of Judah and forms an integrated block of text covering the period from the conquest of Canaan through to the end of the kingdom of Judah and the beginning of the Babylonian Exile. Written soon after the fall of Israel, it reflects the political realities of Judah at the time. It was written by an anonymous author now known as the Deuteronomist because of his involvement in completing the Pentateuch, with later additions for the remainder of the history. It shows some bias towards the Kingdom of Judah, but apparent input from former Israelites gives it some affinity to the northern kingdom.
The Chronicles (1 Chronicles and 2 Chronicles) covers the entire period from the Creation to the Babylonian Exile, briefly mentioning Cyrus the Great and the Return of the Jews from Exile. It was was written by an anonymous author now known as the Chronicler, shortly after the Babylonian Exile. In some places the text in Chronicles is so close to that of the Deuteronomic History as to demonstrate that the Chronicler used the earlier work as his source. In other places, the Chronicles differ from the History, to correct inconsistencies in the earlier work or to reflect the Priestly preferred view of history.

It is not possible to list the individual differences between the two accounts, but one difference can be summarised. The Book of Chronicles has omitted mention of the reign of King Ish-bosheth and minimised the roles of Samuel and King Saul. It contains no mention of Samuel's anointing of Saul as king, nor any mention of Saul's many victories or the bitter feud between Saul and David. Samuel's role in anointing David as Saul's successor is omitted; instead the elders of Israel simply joined in anointing David king by acclamation, in gratitude for his leadership under Saul.
