Richter of the California Institute of Technology as a mathematical device to compare the size of earthquakes. The magnitude of an earthquake is determined from the logarithm of the amplitude of waves recorded by seismographs.

The difference between the Richter scale and the Shindo Scale is that the Richter Scale is measured in energy released by the earthquake and the Shindo Scale is measured by the degree of shaking.
