Antarctica is a continent surrounded by salt water: the Arctic is salt water surrounded by continents.

The Antarctic continent is covered -- 98% of it -- with an ice sheet. It is about 30 degrees F colder than the Arctic.

Apart from both being at separate ends of the world, the artic is actually a mass of floating ice, while the antarctic is ice covering solid land.
