The term "republic" is rather general, and is used to indicate a state in which the public can elect or nominate a ruler instead of having the state be ruled by a monarch. Currently, 135 countries claim to be republics.

There are many different types of republics, though. For example, there are socialist republics, communist republics, mercantile republics, Calvinist republics, democratic republics, liberal republics, and even Islamic republics.

The United States operates as a democratic republic, which is a state that has publicly-elected rulers, and in which all members of the public are guaranteed the same rights, even despite minority status.

What is difference between democratic and republic countries?

A democracy is a form of government, where the average person has a direct say, or vote, in the everyday affairs of the government. The city-state of Athens, in ancient Greece, is a prime example. A republic is a form of government where the average person is represented by someone else in the above-mentioned affairs. These representatives essentially cast their vote, which represents an entire area of the country or a group of people the representatives represent. Prime example of this, is the United States, a democratic republic; very different from a democracy. Not every republic is democratic in nature, though it may be advertised as such. Many totalitarian nations such as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), the People's Republic of China (Communist Mainland China) and the late Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Communist Russia and various satellite states) like to put those words in the name of their country to give its citizens the illusion of choice and freedom. These countries may have a republic as a functioning government, however the elections are usually posed and not "free" or "fair" in even the vaguest sense of the words.

What are the difference between autocratic and democratic state?

The fundamental difference between an autocratic and democratic state comes from the location of governing power. In the former, power is wielded by an individual or a small group of leaders, whose dictates are not bound by accountability to the citizen-body. By contrast, a democratic state's power is vested in the citizen-body: ultimately, the "people" are responsible for the decisions and policies of their state, and all democratic leaders are accountable to the same for their leadership activities and decisions.
