When it is said the the earth rotates, it is meant that the earth is spinning on its axis, which is what causes day and night. However, a revolution is the earth going once around the sun, which is what causes the change of seasons and year.

When you spin a basketball on your finger, the ball turns round on a vertical axis that is located within the ball itself. But with revolution the vertical axis is located outside of the body while it goes round. For example the Earth revolves round the sun, where the vertical axis is assumed to be. But it rotates about a vertical axis that passes through its center.
