What is the difference between the terms caste and race?

A race is a set of people who share appearance traits, such as skin color, hair color and texture, etc. People of the same race may be of very different socioeconomic status. One's Caste has much more to do with the societal rank one's parent's held. Although in many countries employing a caste system, such as India, members of different castes have differing appearance traits, this is because of selection over a much shorter period of time than that which created the different races. For instance, we wouldn't recognize members of a certain caste as a race, since there are relatively few of them, and they are all located in the same region of the world. Similarly, we don't consider a family a caste just because all the people in it look similarly.
