Suburban: outside a large city (of 200,000 or more)
Rural: in the middle of nowhere/small college town
Rural is farmland, country, open prairie or woodlands with houses/residences or businesses. Suburb is on the outlying areas of a city. Urban is closer to a city, or can be smaller cities next to a larger city that comprises an "urban area".
The opposite of the suburb is the rural area (countryside).
