yellow stone is a supervolcanowhereas mount saint helens isnt... yellowstone is 1000 times more powerful than mount saint helens which is 2500 times smaler. as yellow stone is a supervolcano and it emmited 240 cubic miles of rock, this means a supervolcano like yellow stone if it erupts can change the temperature of the earth as the debris released blocks the sunlight...potentially causing an iceage with global consuqunces... mount saint helens cant do this and will just cause damage to the place it arupted in the US...

Kilauea is an active volcano with regular eruptions and it's in Hawaii. Mount Saint Helens is a (hopefully) dormant volcano in Washington state. Mount Saint Helens had a HUGE eruption back in 1980 and some minor ones in 2006.

  • Mount St. Helens is a subduction volcano in the Cascades mountain range, which is produced by the subduction of the Pacific Oceanic Plate under the North American Continental Plate. Its lava has a very high water content resulting in explosive eruptions as this water flash vaporises to steam as the lava approaches the surface. Its most recent eruption (in 1980) blew out the eastern side of the volcano's cone.
  • Yellowstone is a hotspot supervolcano, containing the water filled caldera left by the volcano's most recent eruption (a very large explosive eruption approximately 630,000 years ago that completely destroyed the volcano's cone) and a large area of various geothermal vents (e.g. geysers, hot springs, mud pots, fumaroles). As a hotspot, its lava has a low water content resulting in fluid generally nonviolent eruptions (as can be seen in many of the locations to the west of Yellowstone where the hotspot was in the past), however it seems that interactions with groundwater at its present location have tended to shift its eruptions to become highly explosive.

What are the similarities and differences between Mount Saint Helens and Mount Kilauea?

Mount St Helens is a Composite Cone Volcano (meaning it is infrequent yet violent) and Kilauea is a Shield Volcano (meaning it is not violent). A shield volcano is widely spread between two continental crust though Kilauea is on a hot spot. Meaning it is in the middle of a plate. Composite Cone Volcanos are located between oceanic plates and continental crusts.
