This two are much the same they are just the assistant of the dentist. So to answer your question they have the same time frame in training because in dental assistant training they cover everything..

The above answer couldn't be more wrong. Dental assistant, Dental Lab technician and Dental hygienist are 3 completely different jobs with 3 different training routes. The only similarity is that they are all related to dentistry and they all work under the orders or direction of a dentist.

Dental Lab techs usually make about the same or maybe a little more than an assistant, but definitely less than a hygienist (unless they own their own lab). They don't usually work in a dental clinic, but in an off-site lab and they make dentures, crowns, bridges etc. They don't usually deal with live patients on a daily basis. I'm not familiar with the schooling requirements to be a lab tech. I think you can be trained on the job for some aspects of it.
