Reverse acting (DA) works by supplying current when the temperature rises, using power to shut the system down. Direct acting (DA) supplies current as the temperature falls, turning the system on when heat is needed, by supplying power when it is off.

As an example, a zone valve in an apartment can be normally open or normally closed. One type needs power to open, the other uses power to close.
