A normal (petit) jury hears evidence of a case after the arrest and arraignment of the accused.

A grand jury hears evidence before the case is filed and may issue indictments based on the evidence presented by the prosecutor alone.

Additionally. . .

A petit jury merely listens to testimony presented as well as instructions of the judge. It then renders decisions based on the evidence and judge's instructions. Besides criminal cases, it also hears civil cases.

A grand jury gets to ask questions of witnesses and can actually start their own investigations into matters not even presented by the prosecutor. (Prosecutors normally attempt to take charge of the jury but it is actually the jury who is in charge.) After hearing the evidence it either bills (indicts), no bills (does not indict), or passes (takes no action), not by a unanimous vote as in criminal cases but by 9 out of 12 as in civil cases. (An indictment merely means the jury believes there is sufficient evidence to hold the subject over for trial.) Grand juries are fun and very interesting to be on, petit juries usually not so.

A grand jury is larger than a petit jury and is convened by a prosecutor to explore whether there is sufficient evidence to indict one or more persons. A petit jury is selected at the beginning of a trial by the judge and counsel to determine guilt in a criminal trial or to find for the plaintiff or defendant in a civil matter. It consists of 6-12 persons.

A grand jury is a panel used by many States (required in twenty-two) and also the federal level to assess probable cause and to issue criminal indictment. This type of panel is not seated as a part of a court at trial but to determine whether a criminal indictment should issue.

A petit jury (usually simply called a "jury") but formally "petit jury" (Law French, in American parlance "PET-it") to distinguish it from a grand jury are empaneled as a member of a court pursuant to Constitutional requirements to assess criminal or civil liability at trial or incident to a trial.

A Grand Jury is a group of people who review the evidance and determine if a jury trial is appropriat. A trial jury is a group of peers who review the evidance and determine if the accused is guilty or innocent. The difference between grand jury and trial jury is that in a trial jury you are reviewed by your peers, ex. same sex, age, ect. but, in a grand jury you are reviewed but peopleof higher level. Alsoin a trial jury you are seeing if the accused is innocent or guilty when in a grand jury you are seeing if a jury is neccicary.

A grand jury is a type of jury that determines whether there is enough evidence for a trial. Grand juries carry out this duty by examining evidence presented to them by a prosecutor and issuing indictments, or by investigating alleged crimes and issuing presentments. A grand jury is traditionally larger than and distinguishable from a petit jury, which is used during a trial.
