Geothermal energy is energy obtained from hot rocks deep underground, used in the production of electricity. The rocks can be used for the production of electricity for hundreds of thousand of years, or longer, because they are kept hot by uranium ore located nearby. Pilot projects are being undertaken at several points around the world, to establish the economic feasibility of this form of energy.

Geothermal energy is clean and plentiful. The main cost to production is the capital cost of constructing the plant and transmission lines and equipment. Once production commences, operating costs are minimal.

Efficiency is actually not a particularly relevant metric for geothermal power because the geothermal energy source is effectively 'free'. Moreover, the efficiency can vary significantly depending on the temperature of the heat source. The more important metrics are the power output (the amount of power the plant can produce) and the cost of the supplied energy. That said, typical efficiencies for geothermal plants are 10-15%.
