The reaction between hexene, bromine, and water is an addition reaction resulting in the formation of a bromohydrin. The reaction is as follows:

1-hexene + bromine --H2O---> 1-bromo-2-hexanol

CH2=CH(CH2)3CH3 + Br2 (aq)----> CH2BrCH(OH)(CH2)3CH3 If stereochemistry is specific, anti-addition will always occur due to the cyclic bromonium ion intermediate, resulting in two trans-enantiomers.

Also, H2O will always attack the most substituted carbon, placing the Br on the less substituted carbon. This RXN can be useful in the laboratory (with or without H2O) as a test for unsaturation. The dark red color of Br2 will dissapate as the RXN proceeds.
