As far as I know it has always been Italian. It's well known as the heart of Little Italy. My grandfather was born and lived on Taylor St. in Chicago in the 1930's and 40's. During that time it was an Italian neighborhood with the typical "West Side Story" type of youth gangs as well as a mafia influence with the Chicago outfit.
