Art appeals to our aesthetic senses. Art contributes to our culture. It helps establish pride in our community and give inspiration. It helps transform an otherwise dull existence. It helps us to get in touch with our inner beauty and the finer things in life. Getting involved in art improves confidence, self-empowerment, and helps us to release our inner potential.
In its purest form art has no function, it is simply art.
However, most art does serve a number of functions as follows:
Arguably, art does not exist in it's purest form, because any number of the above listed items are present. The inseparability of art from the artist makes all art political, because it's creator has made decisions about medium, form, content, and such. Even randomly generating those decisions is a creative decision and has to be selected from a finite number of choices. As a result, the output--the art--still serves one of the above listed functions.
Art is the process and the resulting product of placing the elements of a medium into balance. The definition of balance changes with the medium, with the artist and with the times. But if there is not some kind of balance, the art suffers. If the art is dance, possible elements are the human body and all of its possible movements, interactions among and between bodies, music, costume, and so forth. For music the elements are pitch, timbre, various qualities like tremolo and vibrato, attack, release, tempo, rhythm silence, harmony and more.
The artist entices, even seduces the participants (audience) by presenting beautiful works of balance. The balance can be novel and shocking, showing something of contemporary life that we may be seeing incompletely or incorrectly. The balance may be aesthetically pleasing and calming. The balance may show a tension between appeal to the intellect and appeal to the senses, or it may evoke certain frames of mind, usually with the intention of enlightening the participant in some way.
