If you’re thinking of trying a speed run, good luck. A lot of pokemon depends on strategy and RNG (random number generator). Plus if you’re looking for a specific pokemon then depending on what you’re looking for (such as Feebas), it can take a LONG time. And then there’s evolution—how long will it take for your pokemon to evolve, what conditions do they evolve under, and what level pokemon are you fighting to level your team up?

If you’re wanting to finish battles fast, you’ll need to grind. That can take a good chunk of time and patience depending on your team but it is worthwhile in the long run.

Here are some general tips for winning battles fast (and battles take up 70% of your play time):

  1. Evolve your pokemon. They don’t just change forms this way. They grow exponentially stronger, they can learn new moves, and sometimes they’ll even change their type which can give you a big edge and extra coverage for your team.

  2. Get Umbreon. I KNOW everyone says Vaporeon is best but that’s because of its HP and defense. But no. Umbreon is best and it’s a complete tank. Teach it Toxic, Dark Pulse, Psychic, and Moonlight (which it learns at level 71 so don’t worry about Moonlight for a while). Give it a healing item or berry to restore health. Umbreon is best used to take down opponents the rest of your team would have trouble with. He’s a handful even for fighting types. Raise his defense, special defense, and HP the most, and if you can still use more vitamins, raise his special attack.

  3. Buy lots of potions and revives. Don’t blow all your money immediately on status heals. Keep about 10 of each status heal but be aggressive with those potions and revives!

  4. Plant Leppa berries. Lots and lots of Leppas. You can’t buy Elixirs and Ethers so when facing the E4 and Cynthia, who is a TRUE boss battle, maintain your PP by hoarding Leppas to ensure you don’t run out.

  5. Cut it out with the ultra powerful moves. Yes, moves like Thunder can sweep. But they have 10 or less PP and PP Ups hardly help. When you’re in the midst of a lot of trainers and need to hoard those Leppas, you cannot rely on sweeping moves to OHKO your enemies because it’ll come back to bite you HARD. To add to this, they have less accuracy or a cooldown period which means you can easily waste PP trying to hit your foe, or you make yourself vulnerable to attacks when recharging and no you cannot switch out during a recharge/cooldown. Instead of Thunder, use Thunderbolt. Instead of Blizzard, use Ice Beam. Etc. etc. etc.

  6. Don’t sit on status moves. These babies can turn the tides in your favor. Moves like Swagger may not make sense at first—sure they confuse the enemy but it sharply raises their attack! That doesn’t necessarily mean trouble for you. If they hit themselves, it inflicts MASSIVE damage. Toxic is a waiting move but very good for taking out opponents with high defense or HP (or worse, both), and most pokemon can learn this move.

  7. Eevee can wreck. You don’t have to get just one little Eevee. A girl named Bebe will give you one for free in Hearthome. Save before talking to her and then accept her Eevee, and if it turns out to be a male, restart until you get a female. If you have a Buneary from Eterna Forest, you can actually breed you female Eevee with a male Buneary or Lopunny and the new Eevee can have Double Kick as an egg move! This grants amazing move coverage. In addition, you can now have more than one Eeveelution! And let’s face it, the Eeveelutions are great battlers anyway.

  8. Give up on Porygon… Normally it would be great because of Porygon-Z, but without a lot of trading you just can’t do it. It takes up more time find the items and reliable trade partner than it does to train any other pokemon.

  9. Get. A. Garchomp. Your best bet is to find Gible in the hidden Wayward Cave and evolve it. Gible is not hard to find at all so this won’t take any time out of the game. I say start from Gible because by the time you find Gabite later on—A LOT later on—Gabite is so underleveled compared to the rest of your team that you’ll have to spend a lot of extra time grinding.

  10. Reserve two spots on your team for HM slaves. Get a rock type and water type to serve as HM slaves, make sure they’re the two in your team that you won’t use ever.

  11. level up 3-4 pokemon and NO MORE THAN THAT! Thinning out your levels and xp only means you’ll spend more and more time grinding. Instead, build a well-rounded team with no more than two pokemon weak to the same type. And the one or two that are weak to one type, make sure a third can deal with that type. Do not put two of the exact same types on your team unless one of them is an HM slave.
