where v is the velocity

f is the frequency of the wave

and λ (lambda) is the symbol for wavelength

Wavelength formulaC=λf or λ=C/f

media speed c = frequency f times wavelength lambda. So wavelength lambda = c / f. Media can be sound waves in air or electromagnetic waves or light waves in vacuum.

For an electromagnetic wave, its velocity is approx 3 x 108 meters/sec, precisely in a vacuum it is 2.99792458 m/sec, but 3 x 108 is adequate for most purposes, call this C. Then frequency x wavelength = C, so wavelength = C/frequency. Thus for visible light, the frequency is around 5 x 1014/sec, so the wavelength is around 6 x 10-7 meters or 600 nanometers as it is usually quoted.

Wavelength= the distance between successive identical parts of the wave(in meters)

Ex. from crest to identical position in next crest.

Wavelength is speed of transmission through the medium (usually speed of light) divided by frequency. For example, at the speed of light (3x108 meters per second), a 100MHz radio wave will have a wavelength of 3 meters, while a 1MHz radio wave will have a wavelength of 300 meters.
