The general rule seems to be to do an LLM after an LLB. There exists, however, exceptions to the rule that an LLM is required before doing an LLD or Ph.D in Law, which usually entail a specific amount of work or practical exposure. There are no barristers in the U.S., just lawyers. The requirements for entrance into the bar differ from state to state. In most states, bar entrance requires: 1) a JD degree from an ABA recognized law school 2) passing the MPRE (ethics exam) and state specific bar exam 3) passing a character and fitness examination. New york and massachusets allow Canadian LLB's (canadians are required to have previous undergrad education before entering the LLB program) to take the bar exam and practise.
