What is the difference between BIOS an firmware?
By definition there IS no difference between firmware and BIOS. Firmware = software that is permanently stored in a chip. The BIOS on a motherboard of a computer is an example of firmware. BIOS = Basic Input/Output System = Firmware that can control much of a computer's input/output functions, such as communication with the floppy drive and the monitor.
What are 4 ways in which an operating system controls hardware and software on a computer?
as I remember it the main ways to control peripherals on a computer or computer based systems is software, mediumware, firmware and hardware, things may have changed since i was last at school, but it is worth checking out them all, mediumware may have evolved into firmware by now, but you never know, check it out :) So essentially you have hardware which is controlled by its firmware, the firmware is what the operating system (mediumware)uses to control the hardware, and the software is the part that interacts with the operating system (mediumware) to make it possible for anyone to use the hardware in a nutshell.

Difference between firmware and software?
To a certain degree, firmware is a type of software. For instance, the ROM BIOS is a type of firmware. The main difference is that the firmware is needed for the system or device to work at all and comes installed in the device. You don't have to add BIOS code to a computer, though you can upgrade it; it simply comes with the motherboard.

What is the difference between firmware and OS?
Firmware is a program that is stored on non-volatile memory on integrated circuits. Roughly speaking it is hard wired in and can not be changed without changing the components. OS (operating system) is simply the base program that allows your computer to work although this is a bit vague because MS Windows is usually called and operating system but it operates through DOS (disk operating system) which is also an operating system. The OS is usually stored on the hard drive. Your computer will have firmware that loads up the operating system when you switch it on.

What is an operating system and what are the functions of an operating system?
An operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs. All computer programs, excluding firmware, require an operating system to function. An operating system has three main functions: (1) manage the computer's resources, such as the central processing unit, memory, disk drives, and printers, (2) establish a user interface, and (3) execute and provide services for applications software.
