a heat sink is a passive heat exchanger component that cools a device by dissipating heat into the surrounding air. In computers, heat sinks are used to cool central processing units or graphics processors.

Well the CPU generates heat and in order for the CPU to remain in a safe temperature zone a Heat sink is added on top of the CPU.

The heat sink absorbs the heat and is sent out by the fan near the back of your computer.

A heat sink is normally made from a material such as aluminium or copper. These metals are good conductors of heat.

Heat is transferred to the heat sink from the CPU/ microprocessor via conduction.

The fan then cools the heat sink by sucking cool air across the heat sink and blowing away warm/ hot air.

If the fan fails the buildup of heat in the processor causes the processing time to slow - this is one of the symptoms that the fan is either not working properly or broken.

If it is not replaced the CPU chip can actually explode resulting in a dead PC/ laptop.

Because of this cooling function it is not advisable to use a laptop computer on a bed without something flat underneath it, blankets/ sheets can block the air intake slots on the side of the laptop and prevent adequate or efficient cooling, possibly damaging the CPU.

The heat sink absorbs the heat from the processor and then the fan disperses the heat.

What does heat sink do?

It helps conduct heat away from the object on which it is placed. Without the heat sink, a computer CPU would get too hot to function.

Where in the motherboard can you find northbridge?

Just below where the CPU is located under a heat sink. Although most modern motherboard don't have north bridges and south bridges and instead are combined into a single chipset.

What is a fan and heat sink?

A heatsink is a piece of metal that sits on top of your computers CPU (and also some other components) that helps conduct heat away from it, the fan you're referring to sits on top of the heat sink and moves the heat away and (ideally) out of the case.
