The rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum are both packaging systems. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum creates and stores steroids. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is important to the synthesis and storage of proteins. The ribosomes produce the amino acid chain while attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The endoplasmic reticulum then pinches off a vesicle for transport.
