During the process of the water cycle, the Sun provides thermal energy to the Earth's surface water which is the key to evaporation. The Sun heats bodies of water which then evaporates into the atmosphere becoming water vapor. The water vapor then condenses and cools, becoming precipitation before falling back to the Earth in the form of surface runoff, rain, snow, hail etc.

Without the Sun's thermal energy, the whole water cycle will cease to work. In other words, we will be in big trouble.

The sun generates the entire process of the water cycle. Without the sun, several things would happen. First of all, the water would not be able to evaporate off the ground because there would be no heat. Second of all, there would be no life, so there would not be any transpiration or holding of water in life. Third of all, there would be no effect of the sun on the atmosphere, so any kind of weather would not happen. Fourth of all, the Earth rotates around the sun, so any kind of physical characteristics of water on Earth rooting from that would be affected. In other words, there would be no water cycle.

The sun gives off radiant energy that we see as light and feel as heat on our skin. The energy given off by the sun increases the energy (Heat) of the water. When the molecules of water reach the necessary amount of energy to break the Polar Covalent bonds, the water will then begin to evaporate. When this happens the water makes its way into the air and onto its next step in the water cycle. Without the sun, the evaporation of water would be extremely difficult and likely greatly affect the balance of the water cycle.
