for a professional probably about 230 yards

If you are an average golfer probably about 150-200 yards. that's on the fairway, clearly if you are in the rough it will be lower and depends how good the club is

well... it depends on a lot of things such as the weather, the gradient, the quality of the golfer, the ball the club and even the altitude. Although roughly an average drive by an average player may go between 220 and 270 yards with professionals hitting it regularly over 300 yards. But if you are just a beginner just starting yours might go only 100 yards depending on your strength.

What is the general distances golf clubs should hit a golf ball?

Distance depends on numerous factors but rest assured there are no "general distances", even on tour every player hits each club a different distance Tiger can hit his sand wedge 127 and AK 112 (Source :Tee it up with Tiger and AK). Therefore hit the range and dial it in. A simpler but not fool proof method is the following: You will pretty much have a 10-15 yrd distance gap between clubs,so take your pitching wedge and add 10-15 yrd and that is your 9 iron another 10-15 yrds and that's your 8iron and so on.

The average length of a golf club?

It depends on the club. Drivers are the longest clubs - most of them have shafts of around 45". A 3 iron will have a longer shaft than a 4 iron; the clubs get sequentially shorter as the numbers get higher. Putters are the shortest clubs in general, with the exception of belly and long putters. If you are referring to the average length of the golf clubs in a set, take out your 5 iron and measure that.
