However, if you were to stand where the gassy layers give way to liquid (its approximate surface), gravity would be about 25m/s2. That's over two and a half times the gravity on the surface of Earth.

If you weighed 100lbs on Earth (where gravity is 9.8 m/s2), you would weigh about 254lbs on Jupiter, or be around 254% as heavy (or 154% heavier).

This is because, though Jupiter is 318 times the mass of the Earth, it is 11 times greater in diameter. Gravity increases with mass, but decreases with the distance from the centre of mass. The gravitational force is g=m/r2 (gravitational constant x mass of Jupiter x mass of the object, all divided by the distance between the centres of mass squared).

Jupiter's surface gravity is about 23.6N/kg, compared with Earth's 9.8 N/kg. Supposedly, this is the pull at the base of the cloud cover. But you still couldn't stand there, as the surface of Jupiter is liquid hydrogen at thousands of degrees (due to atmospheric pressure).

Edit: The surface gravity of Jupiter is normally given for a depth where the

atmospheric pressure is the same as Earth ("1bar"). So the pressure would

not be a problem, but you still couldn't stand there!

Also these values for gravity vary a bit. I've seen 26 Newtons per kg., for

example. It depends a bit on the definition.

The gravity on Jupiter is 2.5 times as much on Earth, as measured at the arbitrary "base" of its atmosphere, which is not the bottom of it. The gases continue to become denser for several thousand miles deeper toward the core.
