The stoat is the European name for the short-tailed weasel, Mustela erminea, also called ermine when in its white winter coat can be found almost everywhere throughout the northern temperate, subarctic and Arctic regions, Asia, Canada, northern USA and lives mostly in grasslands of Eurasia and North America. Their habitat is to make their dens in the old roots of a tree or in the crevice of a rock. Stoat or Ermines are capable of having several dens or in the roots of trees farther south, but there are no trees on the tundra.
The Stoat was introduced to New Zealand during the late 1800's in an attempt to control the rabbit population and is considered a serious pest as a predator of native wildlife. The stoat is considered to be the prime cause of the decline and/or extinction of a number of endemic New Zealand bird species.
Stoats are largely nocturnal or crepuscular but will sometimes come out during the day ====== ====== == ==
stoats have black and white fur or brown and white. the darker colour covers most of it's body (the top of it)
In the winter their all their fur turns white to be camouflaged, this also makes it easier for them hunt and catch prey.

In Ireland you can't buy a stoat because they are protected by the laws. In the United States, a stoat is considered an exotic animal and may or may not be legal to keep as a pet, depending on where you live. If it is illegal in your area, there may be high fines for keeping one, so it is best to check the laws before you attempt to find one to purchase.

A stoat could kill a cat if it is stronger than the cat. If a stoat has a disease and bites the cat or causes injury, it could kill the cat. Otherwise a cat will usually be able to defend itself from a stoat.
