Halfway points do not mean a spot on the map that is exactly one half of the distance (they are not surveyors marks) but rather a point between two ponts of travel where food, points of interest (and in the pioneer days, and perhaps even more so today, physical secutity) and rest are available. There are many US towns and communities that were established and some were even named Midway to provide a secure resting place.
If the search is for somewhere to get a decent bed and a meal consider the longer drive of about 650 miles out of this 1,082 mile trip on day one and consider Valdosta, Georgia which should meet everyone's needs and still get you to Miami early in the day.
Atlanta at 420 miles into the journey works well for those who simply can't get started on the first day of a holiday.
Macon appears to be the best solution at about 531 miles into a 1,082 mile auto trip and enough size to provide dining and accomodations that will meet any budget. The quality and variety may not compare to Atlanta's on the upper end of the scale but if the destination is Miami then money is probably not an issue to begin with.
