In practice, in the US since about 1955, and at least 1964, Conservatism (capitalized) is a much more specific and radical force which weds strict social and religious conservatism to a type of Libertarian economic philosophy not in concert with traditional conservatism as laid out in the West since the18th century. Depending on the branch of the movement we're speaking of, more or less emphasis can be placed on any of varying parts; in particular, a 'strong foreign policy' used to be considered the 'third leg of the stool' of Conservatism, but support for this wing of the movement, represented by John McCain among others, has recently dropped significantly, with the GOP content to devastate Defense spending so long as normal government spending is vastly shrunken as well. Contrast Neoconservatism to 'Paleoconservatism' (making a comeback) or the 'Old Right' of Robert Taft, Warren Harding, and others.
