Shakespeare uses the act of Mercutio stepping in and dying for Romeo as a dramatic effect, which in turn gives Romeo a reason to kill Tybalt.
Also exiling Romeo from Verona is another dramatic effect because it gives both Romeo and Juliet reasons to want to kill themselves.
The previous scene was the happiest scene(the wedding) and act three scene one is where all the tradgedy starts mercutio(romeos best friend) gets killed then in anger romeo kills Tybalt
