In the event of a direct short between the "hot" (red or black) power lead and the metal casing of an appliance, the ground lead will cause a circuit protector to trip, thus shutting off power rather then charging the casing and allowing the potential (pardon the pun) for a severe shock or possible electrocution.

All houses should already be grounded, but I know some are not, your home needs to be grounded to avoid lightening damage. If it is not grounded lightening can easily strike it or nearby and right to your home in some cases and causes alot of trouble and expense. Make sure before you buy or rent any home to make sure the place is grounded.
