First, pH stands for the negative logarithm to base 10 of the Hydrogen ion concentration. The pH scale is useful for a number of reasons. It provides us with an understanding of how many hydronium (H3O+) and hydroxide (OH-) ions are in a solution. The more hydronium ions in a solution, the more acidic a solution is and thus the lower the pH. Also the scale is a very convenient 0-14.
