Venus is volcanic. It is mostly smooth volcanic plains, with several "continents" arising from the plain. Two of the "continents" are about the size of Australia and South America. It appears that volcanic activity is low, and that the surface is relatively intact from the last several hundred million years. There is no water, though it is thought that water existed several billion years ago. The atmosphere is primarily carbon dioxide (96.5%) and nitrogen (3.5%). There are high level clouds of sulfur dioxide with sulfuric acid that evaporates before reaching ground level. Due to the runaway greenhouse effect of the atmosphere, surface temperature is about 860 F.
