The primary responsibility of a defense attorney (generally a public defender) is to get their client (the defendant) the best deal possible.

The "ideal deal", as I'll call it, would be a "not guilty" verdict, but most defenders are well aware of their client's guilt. In that case, the best action is to lessen the charges as much as possible, which is generally negotiating a plea deal with the prosecutor.

For example, someone being charged with battery (hitting someone) may take a deal to have their charges lessened to assault. The defendant benefits because they'll serve less jail time, and the state benefits because it saves a lot of time and money.

The defense is also (partially) responsible for making sure that their client's rights were not violated, although this responsibility is legally given to the prosecutor.
