The cell nucleus is found only in eukaryotic cells. The cell nucleus is the control center of the cell and DNA is found inside the nucleus in the form of chromosomes.

It is the site of transcription of genes directed by the needs of the cell.

There is also a nucleolus inside the nucleus which makes ribosome parts that are sent out into the cytoplasm and assembled into complete ribosomes. These ribosomes make proteins.

The nucleus was the first organelle to be discovered. What is most likely the oldest preserved drawing dates back to the early microscopist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632 - 1723).

The function of the nucleus as carrier of genetic information became clear later after its was first seen by van Leeuwenhoek.
