Excellent question with no single answer. If we (humankind) knew the answer to this, then we would know everything. The true nature of reality is elusive and may depend upon individual beliefs, rather than pure science. Some might say the key to reality is understanding. Others might say the key to reality is knowing. Superficially these two statements appear the same, but they differ in an important aspect - knowledge does not require understanding. Ultimately, nothing unreal exists and what you perceive is your reality, even if your perception is different to everybody else's. When I die and can perceive nothing, there is no reality as far as I am concerned. The key then is "I think, therefore I am" as quoted by Rene Descartes. The key, as I see it, is that I am here to experience it now and that anything else is purely imaginary.
