Lake Superior is the largest lake in Michigan, although much of the lake is actually located in Ontario (Canada) and portions are also technically in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The other Great Lakes bordering on the state are in order of size: Huron, Michigan, and Erie, and each also is shared with other states and/or Ontario.

The largest lake contained completely within the borders of Michigan is Houghton

lake in Roscommon County, with 20,044 acres (over 31 square miles) in area. The deepest is Torch lake in Antrim and Kalkaska counties, which while it is only 18,770

acres in area, has depths up to 285 feet.

The largest lake (by surface area) which is actually IN (as opposed to on the border of) Michigan is Houghton Lake. Torch Lake is about 10% smaller in surface area, but much deeper, than Houghton Lake and probably contains a greater volume of water.

The largest freshwater lake in the world (again by surface area) is either Lake Superior or Lake Michigan-Huron (if you consider Lakes Michigan and Huron together as a single body of water). Both of these border Michigan.
