What are headers and do they help MPG?

Headers are aftermarket replacements for the exhaust maniflods. They are the parts bolted directly to the heads on the sides of the engine. They channel the exhaust from each cylinder down to the exhaust pipes. :)

What are exhaust pipes made of?

Automobile exhaust pipes can be made from several different materials, it depends on the vehicle. Standard auto exhaust pipes are made of a light weight steel tubing, thus they eventually "rust out". Aftermarket pipes can be manufactured from Stainless Steel for longevity, or a steel tubing with a ceramic coating used to reduce heat being radiated from the piping into the engine bay or compartment.

How do you de-restrict the exhaust of a Honda VT 125 Shadow?

It is possible to dissassamble exhaust pipes and remove the silencer pipe from inside the exhaust proper. This will, however, make the bike more noisy and thus illegal in many countries. Another way would be to buy other than stock, that is aftermarket exhaust pipes and mount them on the bike.

What is the best after market exhuast for a Honda vlx 600 shadow?

"The Best" is a matter of personal preference, but I'm very happy with the performance of Cobra Slash-cut pipes on my '07 VLX. I found the factory exhaust to be a factor in the VLX's inherent vibration tendencies, something that was lessened by the switch to the aftermarket exhaust. Keep in mind that such aftermarket pipes do make the bike louder. This is not a real complaint amongst enthusiasts, but state and local laws can come into play when altering the bike's exhaust.

What exhaust pipes do you recommend to your friends and people looking for exhaust pipes?

There are many different types of exhaust pipes all with different reliabilities. The best type would be stainless steal exhaust pipes which do not rust and therefore last the longest. They are however the most expensive.

Can you install new aftermarket exhaust made for 1999- up Honda Shadow 600's to a 1989 Shadow if not why almost all of the aftermarket pipes say 1999 and upwards like Arlen Ness?

There are several companies that produce aftermarket exhausts for the Honda Shadow 600 models. At least one company produces what they call "Cobra Streetrod Exhaust Slashdown" that fits Honda VLX600 Shadow VLX from and including the 1988-2007 models. It is especially stated by this company, which sells on E-Bay, that this exhaust set will fit a 1989 Honda Shadow 600 VLX. So you have no problem there. What Arlen Ness says will fit or not I cannot comment on. His company provides many specialty things for motorcycles including the 1989 model of the Honda 600's. What he states is without doubt true for his own products. What confuses this issue is that the Honda Shadow 600 has been fitted with many different aftermarket types of exhaust pipes. Different styles and designs. There are the slip-on pipes for example which are easy to install. Then there is the fully made exhaust in one piece going from the cylinder head in one piece. These are more expensive. You can potentially install several different types of exhaust pipes for your bike if you are willing to go that extra mile which is to have someone with basic welding and metalworking skills change the fasteners for the exhaust you want to use. This is a very small and inexpensive job and takes less than an hour for a skiiled person to do.

How hot does a motorcycle exhaust get?

The end of the of the exhaust which has the most likely chance of coming into contact with the passenger will reach a temperature of up to 250 degrees c (482 f). Most exhaust pipes have shielding, to prevent accidental burns, but these too can get hot but to a much lesser degree (up to 60c).. source: "Case studies in contact burns caused by exhaust pipes of motorcycles" The part of the exhaust closest to the engine can get up to 400 degrees c (750 f), but is relatively hard to get to.
