There is no law relating to this in Ohio. The key is that the child must be safe, must feel safe and must be able to handle any emergencies.

Most authorities agree that 12 or 13 is okay to be home alone for short periods of time. Looking after younger siblings is a different story and requires more maturity, particularly with siblings as they are going to fight being told what to do by a brother or sister. "If you look to Ohio.s state or local laws, you won't find a minimum age specified. Instead, the Ohio Revised Code says that parents are responsible for providing proper care and supervision for their children." - Ohio State Family Development and Human Science There are very few states in the U.S. with legal minimum ages for children home alone, but many state agencies have published guidelines. Georgia, Illiniois, Maryland and Oregon are a few of the states with specific ages mentioned in their laws.

12 years of age appears to be the most common recommendation. Below in Related Links is an article entitled Home Alone Children Legal Age Limits which provides a state by state comparison with references.

One guideline from a California child welfare representative suggests that 8 year olds and over can be left at home for a brief period of time (usually just after school).

The legal age of majority for the state is 18. Ohio does not have emancipation status nor the grounds nor procedures for emancipation of minors except as it pertains to adoption or special needs cases as determined by Department of Family Services or Juvenile Court.

Legally, No. What the chances that the police will drag you back home with you only being one month away from the age of majority? Slim. But they could, and they might if it's a situation where you're homeless, living in an unsafe environment (ie a known drug house), etc.

In all states, the general rule of thumb is that a 12-14 year old can express an opinion, however the judge is under not legal obligation to consider or grant the child's request. In either case, a motion to the court must be filed for a determination to be made.

A child is free to decide which parent to live with in every state once they have reached eighteen years of age.

What is Ohio's law to leave a child alone?

From my understanding, a parent can leave their child or children home alone at any age, as long as they think they are mature enough to handle it. Basically, there is not a law in Ohio about leaving a child alone. However, in the instance that something was to happen while the child or children were alone, then something would be done legally.
