In S.C. a child as young as nine can be left home alone, the "Catch-22" is that if something happens and the child is injured, the parent or guardian can still face charges. Charges can be brought if it is proven the child was left in a dangerous or unsafe environment, which cover such things as no access to a phone or safe adult contact in case of emergency, left in a house where there were guns, access to alcohol, no adequate food supply (how that is defined is a mystery), and so forth.
