∙ 14y agoJesus was first depicted with long hair in the 4th Century AD. Emperor Constantine had recently started allowing Christianity to be practiced, and there was a demand for Christian art. Unfortunately, The Bible at this point had not been canonized, and there was no pre-existing Christian art (as Christians had been persecuted by Rome). Thus, Roman artists used the long-haired, bearded Zeus as a template, an image has been passed down to this day.

In the 1st Century Jewish world, having long hair was prohibited unless taking a Nazarite vow (which Jesus never did); even then, the head was shaved after the mourning period ended. God calls for a separation of the way that women and man present themselves; women should wear different clothing and have long hair while Men should wear beards and keep their hair short.

Another perspective:Getting regular haircuts wouldn't have been a high priority for most men in first-century Palestine, but the popular depictions of Jesus with long hair are only that - depictions. The real question is, why did artists choose to portray Him that way? ∙ 14y agoI don't think that anyone really knows for sure, but the people in that time and place had generally darker skin, not like African American dark, but like they were really tan, and their hair was dark.

∙ 12y agoJesus had everything all human males have. He truly lived and experienced all things human. He had a real physical body, He may have had un-Christian thoughts a a small child. He worked, and prayed, and celebrated as all humans do. It would have been pointless to live as an example to people if He didn't have the same temptations, desires, ect. With His life, He showed mankind how to overcome difficulties, temptations, and sin and to live by God's law, which is the Ten Commandments.

∙ 12y agoAccording to historians the likelihood that Jesus had long hair is not good. Even among the Jewish communities, short hair was preferred and it is most likely that Jesus had short hair as was the fashion of the day.
