First, the hen lays a clutch of eggs that was fertilized by a rooster. The hen sits on the eggs for twenty-one days, and after that time, the egg hatches. The chicks stay for a while with their mother, and then leave the nest. They then grow up, and mature at around five months. Then they, too, are able to reproduce.

There are three stages in the life cycle of a rooster. The first stage is the egg that takes 21 days to hatch. The second stage is the chick. It will take approximately 4 weeks for the chick to grow all of its feathers. The final stage is the rooster which results 6 months after the egg hatches.

How long does a Chickadee live?

The average life-span of a Black-capped Chickadee is probably about 2.5 years. The longest lived on record was 12 years 5 months. In captivity the average is 7 years. Another reference reported the average life expectancy for a black capped chickadee as 1.5 years for a female and 1.8 years for a male. Mortality from predation is especially high for very young individuals but weather and accidents seem to be the primary causes of death of all age groups.
