What is the main cause of the desert conditions in the Sahara?

Subtle changes in the Earth's orbit (axis tilt shifted from 24.14 to 23.45 degrees) contributed to the desertification of the area now known as the Sahara between 3,600 to 6,700 years ago. The climate changes were strongly amplified by resulting atmospheric and vegetation feedback in the subtropics.
