Eight of the main events in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets are:

• Harry and the Weasley's have an altercation with Draco and Lucius Malfoy in Flourish and Blotts. Unbeknown to anybody else, Lucius Malfoy slips Lord Voldemort's old diary into Ginny's school books.

• Harry hears a strange voice and then discovers Mrs Norris has been attacked.

• Harry discovers he can speak Parseltongue - the language of snakes.

• Harry finds out that chamber has been opened before and that Hagrid was blamed for it. Hagrid is arrested and Dumbledore is removed from his position of headmaster.

• Hermione is attacked. When visiting her, Harry and Ron discover a torn page from a book that talks about the Basilisk and has the word pipes written on it.

• Harry and Ron discover Moaning Myrtle was the person who died 50 years and realise the entrance to the chamber is in her bathroom.

• Ginny Weasley is taken into the chamber of secrets.

• Harry, Ron and Professor Lockhart go into the chamber of secrets. Harry is forced to continue alone where he fights the Basilisk and stabs the diary to save Ginny Weasley and destroy Tom Riddle.

• A house-elf named Dobby arrives warns Harry not to return to Hogwarts. When Harry refuses, Dobby uses magic in front of muggles - resulting in Harry receiving a warning from the Ministry and the Dursley's locking him in his room.

• The Weasley's rescue Harry from Privet Drive and take him to the Burrow for the rest of the summer. Dobby stops Harry and Ron from getting on the Hogwarts Express, so they steal the Weasley's flying car and fly to Hogwarts. They are spotted by several muggles and crash on the school grounds, almost resulting in their expulsion.

• Gilderoy Lockhart is appointed the new Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor.

• Harry starts to hear a strange voice threatening to kill people. On Halloween, he hears the voice again and then, along with Ron and Hermione, finds a petrified Mrs Norris beside a blood-written message that states: The Chamber of the Secrets has been opened, enemies of the heir beware.

• Colin Creevey is attacked by the monster.

• Lockhart & Snape start a dueling club. Malfoy sets a snake on Harry which nearly attacks Justin Finch-Fletchley. Harry tells the snake to leave him alone and reveals to the whole school that he is a parselmouth.

• Justin Finch-Fletchley and Nearly Headless Nick are attacked by the monster. The whole school thinks now thinks Harry is behind the attacks.

• Harry, Ron and Hermione take Polyjuice Potion to question Draco Malfoy on the Chamber of Secrets. Harry & Ron don't find anything useful and Hermione accidentally turns herself into a cat.

• Harry finds a diary, which somebody tied to throw away, when he writes in it, somebody called Tom Riddle starts speaking to him. Tom shows Harry a memory from 50 years ago, when he was at school and the last time the Chamber was opened. The memory shows Hagrid being expelled after his monster killed a student.

• Hermione and Penelope Clearwater are attacked. Harry & Ron visit Hagrid, but he is taken to Azkaban by the Ministry & the school governors remove Dumbledore from power.

• Harry & Ron visit Hermione in the hospital and discover that she had just found out that the monster was a Basilisk and it was using pipes to travel through the school. Harry realises that the student who died was Moaning Myrtle. Ginny Weasley is taken into the Chamber. Lockhart is tasked with saving her and Hogwarts is closed.

• Harry & Ron tell Lockhart what they know, but find him running away. They force him to help rescue Ginny but once inside the chamber, he tries to curse them using Ron's broken wand. The curse backfires, bringing down the roof of the chamber, and making Lockhart loose his memories. Harry goes on to find Ginny. There he meets Tom Riddle, fights and kills the Basilisk, saves Ginny and destroys the diary - which is later revealed to be one of Voldemort's Horcruxes.
