Their is no single main story in Genesis.
The story of Genesis is the history of the world, its 6 day creation sequence, Adam and Eve, The first sin of eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge, expulsion from Eden, Noah and the great flood, the tower of babel, Sodom and Gomorrah, the birth and history of the patriarchs and their descendants up to their time in Egypt, and a whole bunch of stuff in between.

∙ 11y agoThe main theme of the Book of Genesis is as it's name means is the origin or the beginning of something. In this case the origin of God's creation. It is also called the first Book of the law of Moses.

In the case of Genesis, it is the renewal of the already present planet Earth and the origins of physical life as we know it today. It begins by speaking via 'this is the generation' or in the Hebrew 'toledoth' with God telling the recap story of His Creation in Genesis 1 then Adam telling from his perspective beginning in verse 2:4, etc. It speaks of the whole of mankind until Genesis 10 when it concentrates of the line from Abram to Isaac to Jacob (Israel) and their subsequent history of physical Israel.

It includes the myths, legends, traditions and perhaps some history of the forebears of the ancient Jews, showing how they overcame all difficulties with the help of their God, but always seemed ungrateful and backsliding. It includes two different creation stories, two quite similar versions of the ancient flood story, legendary explanations for the divergence of languages and the genesis of the Hebrew people, ending with their purported sojourn in Egypt.
