The job of a special officer for NYC HHC is to provide security for patients, staff and visitors.. The job is like any law enforcement job.. You take the civil service exam. if you pass you will be placed on a list once your list number comes up you get a letter for an interview. You go to your interview and are placed with an investigator. You have tons of paper work and set up future appointments like medical exam. psych test and oral psych test. after all is done you start the academy. You learn basic police procedures and law pertaining to the nyc hhc .. after the academy you get placed in a hospital/division. even tho you are trained in chemical agent but can not carry on duty.. the only thing you carry is an asp baton. you issue summonses A.B.C AND environmental summonses as well. Now the thing is this most public hospitals are in really poor areas which make up of some real interesting people. I am a believer in carrying firearms. Now the reason i say this is this. there is tons of crimes that happen in and around the area. we have the same uniform and shield as any nypd officer and have the same policies and procedures as well.. we have the same authority. we are nys peace officers.. same authority as any nyc correction officer and same as nys court officers and also sherriffs. our officers do a hell of a job and its demanding and tiredsome. the times are changing and so is the hospitals.. we deal with mentally ill people, now there is a firearm policy from hhc stating that all hhc police officers are not permitted to carry firearms but our brothers in other uniform agencies able to carry in our house/hhc facilties.. i dont get it ..but that is a quick answer. lol.
